#5 Ruby Elizabeth Napper (my paternal grandmother)

Ruby Elizabeth Napper was born on January 3, 1927, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to Winnifred Glaydis Wade, age 31, and Gordon Thomas Napper, age 31.

She was baptized a few months later on March 6, 1927 at the Anglican Church, Saint Cuthbert in St-Laurent, Quebec.

Her mom (Winnifred Glaydis) had heart problems and Ruby was sent around to live with various people during her childhood. [1]

Marriage
Ruby worked in a munitions factory before getting married. [1]

She married Marlen Sidney M. (1928–2017) in Montreal, Quebec, on February 6, 1948, when she was 21 years old.

Children
Ruby and Marlen had six children in 14 years, 3 boys and 3 girls.

The 5 oldest kids. The photo would have been taken on a Sunday,
as every Saturday night their hair was washed and ringlets made, ready for church on Sunday.

Ruby & her youngest daughter

Ruby was very welcoming and was known as "Ma" to many of her children's friends. [1]

She was proud and protective of her children and her home was an open door to others. She took care of anyone's kids, anyone needing a meal, a patch up, or a hug. On Christmas Eve her husband would bring home the last lonely person and Ruby would always have a gift waiting for them. [2]

When her children were older Ruby worked at the post office.

Ruby cared for her mom and her mother-in-law in their last years in her home.

The whole family.

You can tell she liked to have fun.

Ruby was a member of the Legion due to her husband's having been part of the merchant Marines. She enjoyed visiting with friends and playing darts there. [1]

Death
Ruby Elizabeth Napper died in her home on July 2, 1995, in Montreal, Quebec, when she was 68 years old.

My family, living in another province, had been in Quebec to visit her. I remember having a great conversation with her which included questions related to the family history. She spent the day with her family, the evening with friends, and died that night.

She was first buried on July 4, 1995 at Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She was accidentally first buried with her brother Ronald, which was a nice accident as she loved and missed him so. It was discovered that she had been buried in the wrong place so she had to be relocated the next day.

Her daughter, a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter carry her name Ruby, and my own daughter carries her middle name Elizabeth as her middle name.

Her last words to us in her Will were: "I love you all. Don't cry, think of the good time and have an Irish wake. Love Mum." [3]
