#26 William Carter

Birth
William Carter was born in July 1860 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, to Hannah Morton, age 23, and William Carter, age 27.[1]

Early Years
William had two older sisters Mary (1856) and Sarah (1859).

His brother George was born in 1863 when William was 3 and Thomas was born in 1865 when William was 5 years old. All the children were born in Luton, Bedfordshire, England.

The family was living in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, in 1871.[2]

His brother Herbert was born in 1872 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, when William was 12 years old.

His brother Frederick Charles was born in July 1876 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, when William was 16 years old.

He also had a sister named Polly, dates unknown.

In 1891, at age 31, William was still living in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, and working as a straw hat blocker.[3]

Marriage

William Carter married Elizabeth Simpson in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, on September 29, 1894, when he was 34 years old. It looks like her father was also in the straw hat business.

Family
His son Frank William (1896–1912) was born in April 1896, and the following year they welcomed their daughter (my great-grandmother) Edith Emily (1897–1982) on August 12, 1897.

His son Bertrum (1901–1991) was born in 1901, and another son, Herbert Thomas, was born in 1902.

The family lived in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, and all the children were born there. William continued to work in the straw hat manufacturing business, eventually becoming an employer in 1901.[4]

The 1911 Census shows that William's wife Elizabeth reported she had 4 children born alive - 3 still living and 1 who had died. Sons Frank and Herbert are listed on the census and Bertrum is missing. Oral family history doesn't include Herbert and has Bertrum living until age 90. Sadly Frank would die the following year at age 16 of spinal meningitis.

Many many years later his grandson Malcolm recalled a story from when he visited his maternal grandfather, William, around age five. William used to take Malcolm and his little brother to the fields and show them how you got the wheat and peeled it in your hands and rubbed it and blew on it until you could eat the wheat kernels.

Historical
William's family would likely have celebrated the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra at Westminster Abbey while living in the United Kingdom in 1902.

William and his family no doubt suffered along with other residents of Luton, Bedfordshire when an oppressive heatwave ravaged all of England from July through September 1911. If there was a demand for hats to keep the sun off one's head then William will have done well as an employer at a straw hat manufacturer.[5]

When Great Britain issued a declaration of war on Germany in 1914, William Carter was 54 and probably still living in Luton, Bedfordshire.

Death of Sister
His sister Mary A (1856–1921) died on August 28, 1921, in Bedfordshire, England, when William was 61 years old.

Death of Mother
His mother Hannah (1837–1928) passed away on January 23, 1928, in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, at the age of 91.

Death
William Carter died on December 16, 1936, in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, when he was 76 years old.
William passed away on December 16, 1936, in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. His effects, left to his widow Elizabeth, were £4,374 3 s. 3 d.[6] Adjusted for inflation, $7,460.10 Canadian in 1936 is equal to $135,813.28 in 2019. Not an inconsiderable sum!
