#48 John White S.

Birth
John White S. was born on May 8, 1838, in Lochee, Angus, Scotland, to Margaret Alexander, age 35, and John S., age 43. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Early Years
He was the youngest of seven. Siblings were: Robert Alexander (b. 1819), Janet (1822–1898), William Scott (1828–1913), George (1831–1841), Margaret Helen (1833–1910), and Rachel (1834–1922).

1841 Census
This census, taken on the night of June 6, 1841 doesn't show Margaret and only lists John (45), Janet (15), Wm (William, age 13), Margaret (8), Rachel (6), and John White (4). John's father is working as a "H L W," a Hand Loom Weaver. [5] Their address Lochee, in the Civil Parish of Liff, Benvie and Invergowrie, County of Angus, Scotland.

It's possible that George and Margaret may have died before June 1841 as they also don't appear on any following censuses.

1851 Census
In March 1851 John White (13) is living with his father John (56), and sisters Margaret (18) and Rachel (16). Their address is Tofthill, in the Civil Parish of Liff and Benvie, Town of Lochee, County of Angus, in Scotland. John's father is still working as a Hand Loom Weaver. Margaret has no occupation listed, but Rachel is a Steam Loom Weaver. [6]

1861 Census
In April 1861 John White (23) is living with his father John (67) and sister Margaret (28). Their address is Toft Hill Cox Land, in Liff and Benvie, Angus, Scotland. John's father is working as a Hand Loom Weaver, John is working as a Jute Carpet Warper, Margaret is working as a Jute Carpet Warper Winller. [7]

Marriage
John S. married Euphemia Gray Sampson (1834–1904) in Angus, Scotland, on December 13, 1861, when he was 23 years old and she was 27. [8]

A day later Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, died suddenly.

Family
John and Euphemia's son John (1862–1867) was born on June 21, 1862, in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Sadly he passed away in 1867 at the age of 5.

Their son Robert Alexander (1864–1933) was born on August 16, 1864, in Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

Their daughter Elizabeth (called Betsy) Samson (1866–1879) was born on August 17, 1866. She lived to age 13.

Their son David Samson (1868–1879) was born on September 15, 1868, in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Sadly David would pass away in 1879 at the age of 11.

Death of Father
His father John passed away on June 30, 1869, at the age of 74 in Lochee, Dundee, Scotland.

Another son, Thomas Millar (1870–1943) was born on August 9, 1870 in Dundee, Forfar, Scotland. Thomas would become my great-great-grandfather.

1871 Census
In April 1871 John and his family lived at 51 Hospital Wynd in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. [1]

Hospital Wynd is not so called because there was ever a hospital there, but because when Mary Queen of Scots, after the reformation, handed over the ecclesiastical lands to support the “Hospital” (or “Poorhouse” as it is now called) the land at the top of Hilltown was thus transferred to the Town Council. [10]

John worked as a Factory Ovesteer (possibly an overseer?) [1] and it's hard to say whether in his line of work John would have enjoyed additional days off from work, thanks to Sir John Lubbock’s bill that sanctioned government-sponsored bank holidays.

Son William (1873–1951) was born on February 10, 1873 in Dundee, Forfar, Scotland.

A daughter, Elspeth Minnie, was born in 1875 and passed away that same day.

Another son named John (1876–1965) was born in 1876 in Dundee, Forfar, Scotland.

Son James Millar (1880–1966) was born on July 29, 1880 in Dundee, Forfar, Scotland.

1881 Census
In April 1881 John and his family lived at 53 Hill St in Dundee, Angus, Scotland and he worked as a Winding Overseer. Son Robert (16) is working as a Mill Worker. [2]

John and Euphemia endured yet another loss of a child as daughter Jessie Ann was born in 1884 and passed away that same day.

1891 Census
In April 1891 John and his family lived at 12 Kinloch St in Dundee, Angus, Scotland and he worked as a Factory Overseer. Son William (18) is working as a Carpet Printer, son John (14) is working as a Brussel Creeler, son James (11) is working as a Millworker. [3]

Progress made by the United States and Germany in manufacturing and agriculture in 1891, affected many in the United Kingdom, including John S. during the Great Depression of 1873 to 1896.

Death of Sister
John's sister Janet died on December 7, 1898, when John was 60 years old.

1901 Census
In March 1901 John and his family were still living at 12 Kinloch St in Dundee, Angus, Scotland and he worked as a Factory Porter. Son John (23) is working as a Railway Stoker and James (21) is working as a Jute Fluty. [9]

It's possible the family may have have dressed in traditional Scottish attire to attend the Highland Games in 1901. They may also have joined in celebrating the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra at Westminster Abbey while living in the United Kingdom in 1902.

Death of Wife
His wife Euphemia Gray passed away on August 18, 1904, in Dundee, Angus, Scotland, at the age of 70. They had been married 42 years.

Death of Sister
His sister Margaret Helen died on February 19, 1910, in Connecticut, USA, when John was 71 years old.

Death of Brother
His brother William Scott died on December 26, 1913, in Burrelton, Perthshire, Scotland, when John was 75 years old.

Death
John S. died at 8:30 a.m. on February 4, 1914, with his son William at his side. He passed away at 6 Hospital Wynd in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. The cause of death given was gastroenteritis heart failure. He was 75 years old.
