Birth
Jane Lamb was born in 1836 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Marriage
Jane married William Grant in Dundee, Angus, Scotland, on December 31, 1858, when she was 22 years old and he was 21. [5]
Family
Their son Peter was born on September 23, 1859, and daughter Elizabeth was born on October 8, 1860, both in Dundee, Angus, Scotland.
Jane, William, Peter, and Elizabeth were living on Mains Road in Dundee, Angus in 1861 when Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, died suddenly. [1]
Daughter Jessie was born on March 25, 1863. [6] Daughter Jean was born on December 26, 1864. [7] Daughter Isabella was born on April 21, 1868. [7] All in Angus, Scotland.
Living in the United Kingdom in 1871 (88 Hill St in Dundee, Angus), Jane and her family may have enjoyed additional days off from work, thanks to Sir John Lubbock’s Bank Holiday Act of 1871 bill that sanctioned government-sponsored bank holidays. [2]
Her daughter Susan Smart (my maternal gggrandmother) was born on April 2, 1872, just after 3 a.m. on April 2, 1872 at the Davies Land Hospital in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. When Susan was born William was working as a boiler maker.
Historical
The Great Depression of 1873–1896
Progress made by the United States and Germany in manufacturing and agriculture in 1881, affected many in the United Kingdom, including Jane and her family during the Great Depression of 1873 to 1896. At that time they lived at 229 Hilltown in Dundee, Angus, Scotland, in 1881. [3]
Perhaps they had a chance to see the 1888 International Exhibition of Science, Art, and Industry, which brought millions to Scotland in celebration of its innovations.
When the census was taken on April 1, 1901 Jane and William lived at 31 Main St in Angus, Scotland [1]
Death
Jane's date of death is unknown but perhaps she lived to see Scotland’s Highland Games (between May-September) in 1901 and the Coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra at Westminster Abbey on August 9, 1902.
