#15 Mary C. Beaton (Mother's mother's mother)

Birth
When Mary Campbell Beaton was born on March 1, 1894, in Leith, Midlothian, Scotland, her father, Peter, was 35, and her mother, Euphemia, was 37.



Early Years
Mary had a number of older siblings:
Cathrine McDonald (born around 1876), William McDonald (born around 1878), Peter Beaton (born around 1883), another Mary (born around 1885 and still living when Mary C. was born), Margaret (born around 1887), Euphemia McCaskill (born on February 12, 1889), and Duncan (born December 3, 1891).

Younger brother John was born in 1895 when Mary Campbell was 1 year old. Her sister Ruth Jean Lang was born around 1907 when Mary Campbell was 13 years old.

Prior to moving to Canada, in September 1912 Mary obtained a reference letter from M & J Fairbairn where she had been employed for 3 1/2 years.




At some point before 1918 she met her future husband Rowland (also spelled Roland and he sometimes signed as "Ron").

Marriage
Mary Campbell Beaton married Rowland Herbert Cox in Montréal, Quebec, on June 18, 1920, when she was 26 years old and he was 28. They were married by G. F. Kinnear.



Family
Their only child, daughter Mary Beaton, was born on April 28, 1921, in Montréal, Quebec.

In the 1921 census they are living at 2545 Drolet, where they pay $13 a month for rent. Rolland H. is listed as working as a steam fitter, with an annual income of $1,300. The family is Presbyterian. Mary the mother is listed as being Scottish, while Rolland and daughter Mary are listed as being English. Daughter Mary is listed as being born in Quebec. The census showed Mary and Rowland had arrived in Canada in 1912.



Death of Husband
Her husband Rowland Herbert passed away on August 21, 1924, in Quebec at the age of 32. The cause of death was listed as pulmonary and related to his service duty. 

They had been married 4 years and their daughter Mary was only 3 years old.

Mary never remarried and she and her daughter lived with Mary's widowed mother in a small house on Casgrain Street while her daughter was little. Then they moved up farther north on Casgrain.

When Mary (nee Beaton)'s daughter Mary (nee Cox) was first married and had her first two children the family lived with Mary (B.) on Casgrain.

From 1952, when Mary was 58, onward she lived with her daughter's family in Westmound. Her grandchildren called her "Nan," her great-grandchildren would later call her "Nana."

Around 1979 Mary relocated from Quebec to Willowdale, Ontario with her daughter Mary and son-in-law Malcolm.

Eventually she moved into St Raphael's Nursing Home due to Alzheimer's.

Death
Mary died on February 7, 1983 at St Raphael's Nursing Home in Willowdale, Ontario, at the age of 88.

She was buried at Highland Memorial Gardens (Ont Lot 540, space C1) in Willowdale, Ontario on February 9, 1983.
