#21 Mary Ann Botting

Birth
My great-great-grandmother Mary Ann Botting was born in 1859 to Jane Cook, age 35, and Richard Botting, age 40, on Lindfield St, Cuckfield District, Surrey, England. [1]

Early Years
Mary had an older brother, Peter (b. 1855), and older sister, Fanny (b. 1857).

In 1861 the family was living in Lindfield, Sussex, England. Henry Botting (b. 1807) and, his wife Marsha (b. 1802), their sons Henry (b. 1836), and Jabez (b. 1846), and an Ellen Botting (b. 1857) listed as a Lodger were living next door.[2]

Her brother Harry was born in 1863 in Lindfield, Sussex, England, when Mary Ann was 4 years old.

Her sister Emily was born in 1868 in Lindfield, Sussex, England, when Mary Ann was 9 years old.

In 1871 the family was still living in Lindfield, Sussex, England at Stone Cross Cottages. Henry Botting (age 62) and his wife Martha (age 70) were living next door but I'm not sure how they're related.[3]

Mary was baptized at age 13 on July 14, 1872 in Brighton, Sussex, England.[4]

Marriage

Mary Ann Botting married Amos Lelliott or Lillicott (1845–1881) in Horsham, Sussex, England, on July 27, 1873, when she was 14 years old. [5]

Her daughter Emily Elizabeth was born in 1873 or 1874 in Henfield, Sussex, England. She was baptized on 13 Sep 1874 in Henfield, Sussex, England. [6]

Her daughters Fanny Isobell and Jane (or possibly Jennie) were born in June 1877 in Steyning, Sussex, England. Fanny only lived a year, passing away in March 1879 in  Cuckfield, Sussex, England.

Her daughter Jemima Elizabeth Sarah was born around September 1879 in Horsham, Sussex, England.

Residence
Mary Ann lived in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, when the census was taken on April 3, 1881.[7]

Her son John Percy (1881–1945) was born on May 13, 1881, in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. He was given the last name Napper but I don't know if John William Napper was his biological father, the dates don't make sense for that. [8]

Death of Husband

At age 22, with 3 surviving daughters and an infant son, Mary Ann became a widow. Her husband Amos (1845–1881) passed away in June 1881 in Cuckfield, Sussex, England, at the age of 36. They had been married 7 years.

Second Marriage
Mary Ann was 24 when she married 41 year old John William Napper (1842–1915) in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, on January 7, 1883.[9]

Her son William was born in October 1883 in Kent, England.

Her son Albert Edward Victor (1887–1955) was born on March 19, 1887, in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England.

Her son Robert was born in 1887 in England.

Her son Arthur was born in 1889 in England.

The family immigrated to Canada at some point between 1889 and 1891.
In 1891 Mary and her family were living in Ste Anne Ward, Montreal Centre, Quebec, Canada.

There are two almost identical entries in the 1891 Census of Canada. The last name is Francophonized from Napper to Napier in one however the children's names and ages are almost the same. I'm not sure if this is a duplicate census of the same people, or two families with uncanny similarities.

Mary's son Gordon Thomas (1895–1949) was born on February 21, 1895, in Montreal, Quebec.

Her son James was born on June 27, 1898.

Death

In 40 short years Mary Ann Botting had married twice, given birth to 4 daughters and 7 sons, lost a daughter, her parents, and her first husband, and immigrated across the ocean to Canada. Her descendants number in the hundreds. She had 24 grandchildren, including my grandmother Ruby Elizabeth Napper, who had 6 children, 16 biological grandchildren, and 22 biological great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann died on November 27, 1899, in Montreal, Quebec, and was buried the next day in Outremont, Montreal Region, Quebec, Canada.
